Font Identifier

Identify any font by uploading its font file. This tool parses the OpenType name and OS/2 tables to report the exact family, style, designer, version, glyph count, and license. It works on TTF, OTF, WOFF, and WOFF2 files.

Honest limitation: This tool identifies fonts from font files, not from images. If you only have a screenshot or photo of text, this tool cannot identify the font — that would require an image-recognition system, which is not what this tool is.

What the Font Identifier does

The tool reads the name table (fontFamily, fontSubfamily, fullName, postScriptName, version, designer, license) and the OS/2 table (usWeightClass, usWidthClass, sxHeight, sCapHeight, fsType) from the uploaded font file. It then returns a structured report — the same data any professional font tool would show you.

This is metadata-based font identification. It is accurate and verifiable, unlike image-based font matching which uses visual heuristics and often guesses wrong on similar-looking fonts.

When to use the Font Identifier

  • You downloaded a font and want to verify its real family, style, and version
  • You need the license string stored inside the font before commercial use
  • You are auditing fonts across a project and need consistent metadata
  • You want to confirm a font is not a fake renamed file
  • You need the PostScript name for CSS or font integration

Frequently asked questions

Can this tool identify a font from an image?

No. This tool identifies fonts from uploaded font files, not images. Image-based font matching requires a completely different system. If you only have a screenshot, this tool cannot identify the font.

What file formats are supported?

TTF, OTF, WOFF, and WOFF2. The tool detects the format automatically from the file's magic-byte signature.

What if the font has no metadata?

Some embedded fonts strip the name table for size. In that case the tool reports what data is available and shows empty fields for missing entries.

Is the file uploaded to a server?

No. Parsing runs in a Web Worker inside your browser using the OpenType.js library. Your font file never leaves your device.

Can I identify multiple fonts at once?

Upload one font at a time. For bulk comparison, use the Font Comparison Analyzer.
