Frequently asked questions

Why does font-family need fallbacks?

If the primary font fails to load (network error, missing file), the browser falls back to the next family. Without a fallback, text may render as an unpredictable default.

When should I quote font names?

Any family name with spaces, digits at the start, or hyphens. Single-word names like Arial or Georgia do not require quoting.

Should I end with a generic family?

Always. End with serif, sans-serif, or monospace so text renders even if all custom fonts fail.
